Happy Anniversary!
Today, we celebrate the third anniversary of Higher Ground for Humanity, a milestone that wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our community. From mentioning our name to emailing grants and resource leads, you are the foundation that keeps us moving forward.
Moving Mountains
Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s words, “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward,” we haven’t stopped.
Thanks to your generosity, we’ve:
- Empowered over 200 families in California, Mississippi, and Texas with life skills education.
- Launched the Flavors of Origin festival, a vibrant celebration of food, health, and cultural awareness.
Flavors of Change
The American food festival scene often comes with a side of health concerns. We believe understanding the origins of our food is key to making informed choices. Flavors of Origin explores this, asking: “What is the story behind your favorite flavors?”
Flavors of Origin is a nutritional food festival for all ages, exploring this question and diving into the ancestral heritage of these flavors. Checkout our festival trailer to learn more.
By the Numbers:
- 44.7% of African American youth with type 1 diabetes are overweight or obese.
- Obesity rates among children are significantly higher for Hispanic and Black children compared to White and Asian children.
Mindful Meals
We teach mindfulness practices to incorporate healthy eating into daily routines. The festival is just one example of our commitment to:
- Learning and understanding food origins
- Educating youth and families about the impact of food choices
- Promoting natural, healthy alternatives
- Empowered Choices, Healthy Lives
With your help, we can raise awareness and replace mainstream foods with nutritious, delicious options. Feeling overwhelmed? We’ve got you covered!
- Download the “Trash Panda” app to scan products for hidden ingredients.
- Ask friends and family for their favorite recipes – expand your palate and embrace natural flavors.
- Make small changes: start with homemade broths using leftover veggies – you’ll be amazed at the flavor and control over ingredients.
Remember:
- Food should nourish you, not deplete you.
- Small changes can have a big impact.
- What you eat, they eat. Lead by example and show them the way to healthy choices.
